Thyroid
Radioiodine
Intercomparison
Program

The Thyroid Radioiodine Intercomparison Program (TRIP) provides participating facilities with an independent means of evaluating in vivo thyroid radioiodine measurements, using the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)/American National Standards Institute (ANSI) thyroid calibration neck phantom (see International Commission on Radiation Units & Measurements [ICRU] Report #48) and NIST- traceable isotopes for 125I and 131I.   TRIP is coordinated by the Radiation Protection Functional Area and Assurance Management Office of the Environment, Safety and Health Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA.

LLNL established TRIP in response to requirements by ANSI N13.30, ISO/IEC 17025 (Section 5.6.2.1.1), Department of Energy Laboratory Accreditation Program (DOELAP), and other regulatory agencies for participation in a suitable program of interlaboratory comparison. TRIP intercomparison results can be used to assist participating facilities in demonstrating compliance with federal and state regulations.

TRIP was unanimously approved by the Conference Radiation Control Program Directors, Inc. (CRCPD) as an acceptable accreditation program.
